Documentary Editor
Position Type: Freelance, Part time (20-25 hours per week)
Estimated Duration: Expected to last 20 weeks
Rate of Pay: $21 per hour, $2,100 in total bonuses available for completing project milestones
About the Project
We are producing an indie, low-budget documentary regarding suicide prevention in american veterans. This feature-length (current run time: 1 hour 44 minutes) documentary has finished production and is very close to an A-Roll lock.
What You’ll be Doing
We are looking for a video editor who can help bring us home. Here is a list of tasks we would be asking you to perform:
- Trimming the current timeline, mainly A-Roll, based on notes posted in frame.io (removing unnecessary words, correcting minor errors)
- Inserting footage from the four re-enactments we shot over A-Roll
- Inserting already sourced photos and videos
- Sourcing B-Roll from a variety of sources (e.g. public domain, social media of interviewees, and paid stock footage sites)
- Performing color correction (color grading is a plus) on any footage we shot
- Basic sound post-production: Normalizing audio levels, music ducking, attempting to fix minor audio issues, etc.
- Other tasks as required
Who you’ll work with
You’ll be mainly working with the producer, who typically works on this project 5-10 hours a week. The producer possesses in-depth expertise of the subject matter, having participated in all phases of this project. Questions, steering the direction of the project, and more will happen at weekly check-ins.
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
Experience as video editor on student or passion projects
Links to media you’ve edited (or a link to your portfolio)
Experience using Premiere Pro CC
Demonstrated ability to work with and discuss difficult subject matter
Ability to meet once a week during the late afternoon or night on Pacific Standard Time for a weekly check-in
Strong attention to detail
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking, Media, or Design-related field
1 Year of professional (paid) video editing experience, particularly in reality tv or documentary filmmaking
Experience creating and/or editing motion graphics using After Effects CC
Demonstrated interest in documentary filmmaking and/or mental health advocacy
